According to Matalan myth, the duendes of the valley protect and take care of they magueys when darkness falls. If you harvest without their blessing your Mezcal is known to have an unpleasant, hallucinatory effect.

Amally was the daughter of one of the Mezcal Lord’s in Matalan and was favorite of the duendes. She was allowed to play wherever she liked and gave the blessing to all of the maguey she touched.

Sal Rojas Gutierrez is a third generation grower and distiller of Mezcal. He uses 8-12 year old Espadin agave that is hand harvested and distilled to 84 Proof using the traditional Tahona Mill and Copper Alambic Still of Matalan, Oaxaca.
